 The CERN Short-Term Internship Programme in Geneva, Switzerland, provides a monthly net allowance of CHF 1,593 for students undertaking hands-on technical or administrative work.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Be a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State
  • Remain enrolled as a full-time post-secondary (Bachelor's, Master's, or technical/administrative diploma) student

Eligible Courses / Fields of Study
CERN is not just for physicists; they hire across almost all STEM and administrative disciplines. Students pursuing a technical/administrative diploma, bachelor's degree (B.Tech/B.Sc.), or master's degree (M.Tech/M.Sc) in the following domains can apply: 
  • Engineering & Technology: Computer Science & IT, Software Engineering, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Materials, and Process Engineering. 
  • Sciences & Math: Applied Physics, Experimental & Theoretical Physics, Mathematics, Data Science, AI & Analytics, and Environmental/Materials Sciences. 
  • Administrative Fields: Finance, Human Resources, Legal Services, Logistics, Procurement, Scientific Communication, Translation, and Librarianship.
  • Note: PhD students are strictly NOT eligible for this specific short-term track
Eligible Year of Study
Unlike other CERN programs (such as the Summer Studentship, which forces you to wait until your 3rd year), the Short-Term Internship has no minimum semester requirement. [1]
  • Any Year Can Apply: You can register whether you are in your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or final year of your Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • The Main Requirement: You must be at least 18 years of age and remain enrolled as a full-time student for the entire duration of your internship. You cannot apply if you have already graduated. 
The recruitment process consists of four primary stages: [1, 2]
1. Online Application & Documentation
You must submit your formal profile through the official CERN Careers Portal or SmartRecruiters. [1, 2]
  • Required Files: An updated, comprehensive CV formatted strictly in English or French (saved as a PDF).
  • Key Input: You are required to explicitly declare your exact availability window (the specific 1 to 6-month block you are free to work on-site in Geneva). [1, 2]
2. Talent Pool Screening & Profile Matching
Once submitted, your application passes through an initial automated compliance check. 
  • The Talent Pool: If you meet basic age, university, and nationality parameters, your profile enters a centralized pool.
  • Supervisor Matching: Different internal departments (such as IT, Beams, or Engineering) browse this database. They select resumes that closely align with their active project demands.
3. Interviews & Assessments
If a CERN supervisor flags your profile, you will advance to the evaluation stage. The structure varies heavily by department: 
  • Asynchronous Video Interview (Optional): You may receive an email to record video responses to automated behavioral and competency flashes on your screen. 
  • Technical Assessment / Panel Chat: The hiring team or project supervisor will schedule a live virtual meeting to test your engineering concepts, coding proficiency, or project background. 
4. Official Decision & Joining Offer
If the department confirms you are the right fit, the central HR team will issue a final selection notice.
  • You will receive your official CERN Traineeship Agreement contract.
  • You will then begin the pre-onboarding process, which includes coordinating your travel plan from India and arranging your local accommodation
